The Brother MFC-990CW is an ideal multifunction printer with a 4.2-inch touch-screen LCD display, 802.11 b/g wireless networking, a cordless handset with a digital answering machine, autoduplexing, and Bluetooth connectivity. This cheap MFC-990CW printer measures 8.4 inches long, 14.8 inches deep, and 18.1 inches tall, a compact footprint relative to other multifunctional devices. Brother offers a variety of ways to transfer photos from digital memory cards; the most obvious is the media reader just below the display screen on the front face of the printer. There’s also a PictBridge USB port to link up a digital camera, and Bluetooth rounds out the transfer options for wireless printing from an enabled portable device.
The MFC-990CW printer uses a four-cartridge system with individual tanks for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow that load into the front bay. The color cartridges of this cheap printer cost $17 for 750 pages and a black cartridge costs $32 that will last approximately 900 pages, according to Brother, which factors out to 2.2 cents per page of color and 3.5 cents for black.
The drivers on the cheap MFC-990CW printer installation disc give you the option to adjust the printer’s quality settings from normal to fine, fast, and fast normal. Brother also gives you the option to install a third-party imaging application called Paper port, by ScanSoft. This program lets you edit photos in a file-browsing setup similar to Apple’s iPhoto, with basic photo-editing solutions for auto enhancement, blemish erasing, and red-eye elimination. The graphics and photo quality output of MFC-990W printer is good: smooth gradients and curves, rendered with solid color handling with very little blotches or malformations.

A protector for use with an ink cartridge. The ink cartridge includes an ink chamber which stores an ink; an ink supply hole through which the ink is supplied from the ink chamber to an outside of the ink cartridge and which opens in a hole-open portion of an outer surface of the ink cartridge; and a valve member which is provided between the ink chamber and the ink supply hole, which selectively permits the ink to flow from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole and inhibits the ink from flowing from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole, and which communicates with the outside via the ink supply hole. The protector includes a main portion including an engaging portion which is adapted to engage a portion of the ink cartridge so that the protector is detachably attached to the ink cartridge. The main portion has a rigidity assuring that the main portion can substantially maintain an original shape thereof. The main portion further includes an access-restraining portion which is adapted to be located, in a state in which the protector is attached to the ink cartridge, outside the ink supply hole so as to at least partly cover the hole-open portion of the outer surface of the ink cartridge and thereby restrain an external access to the valve member via the ink supply hole.
